LAURA MURIEL TEXIDOR

ReachOut is a mentoring charity working with young people in disadvantaged areas to raise aspirations and help them grow in character and attainment.

ReachOut aims to improve self-confidence and develop numeracy, literacy and communication skills whilst reinforcing their core character values of fairness, self-control, good judgement and staying power. They do this through one-to-one mentoring with positive role models and team activities to promote leadership, trust and responsibility. They currently operate in London, Greater Manchester and Liverpool and work with a number of schools in each location.
Over 35 JDXers are involved with ReachOut, providing mentorship and committing up to two hours of time per week on evening project. Mentors are matched to one young person with whom they work throughout the academic year. The mentees are recommended to ReachOut by their schools; either due to their academic attainment, confidence, self-esteem, behaviour, or the need for a positive role model. Mentors and mentees work together throughout the year on various character-based group activities, maths and English academic work, and to simply chat about life! In the school year 2017-2018, 980 young people were referred to ReachOut by their schools. They received 10,224 hours of mentoring by 863 volunteers. These young people and mentors reported that:

    • 95% of young people improved overall in our core character strengths.

    • 84% of young people improved in their academic confidence.

ReachOut’s recent impact report highlights statistics and case studies from people who have benefitted from the charity.
ReachOut is looking for mentors to start in September and work with their mentee until June. Trainings take place throughout the summer to prepare mentors for a match with a school for the beginning of the academic year. If you’re interested in becoming a mentor, or want to learn more about what is involved, visit the ReachOut website and sign up.
JDX received a huge thank you from ReachOut recently as we have the most number of volunteers from a corporation working across the UK!
ReachOut hosts the Big ReachOut Raise, a fundraising event held each May. Its mentors, mentees, partner schools, corporate partners and supporters get involved with their own fundraising event to help reach the goal of £75,000. If you would like to help, please click here to donate or to start your own fundraising event… no matter how big or small!
